What we Believe

images-heart-shape

The best way to understand and learn about any community is to experience it on the relational level. Statements of faith can tell you what a community of faith's beliefs are, but they can't tell you who they are. If you'd like to discover who we are at SLBC, please come to one of our Sunday services. Alternatively if you want to find out more about the Christian faith, then please sign up for our next Alpha course.

What do we believe about God?

We believe in one God who exists in three distinct persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). We believe that Jesus Christ is the second member of the Trinity (the Son of God) who became flesh to become the Saviour of the lost world and who perfectly shows us what God is like.

What do we believe about the Scriptures?

We believe the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God and that men were moved by the Spirit to write words of Scripture. It is without error in all it affirms.

What do we believe about humankind?

We believe that humans were created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him, but became alienated from that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, humans are totally incapable of coming back into a right relationship with God by their own effort.

What do we believe about salvation?

We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sins. Therefore, salvation only occurs when a person places his faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as the sufficient payment for his sin.

What do we believe about the Christian life?

We believe that every Christian should live for Christ and not for himself. By obedience to the Word and daily yielding to the Holy Spirit, every believer will mature and become conformed to the image of Christ.

What do we believe about the church?

We believe that the church is the body of Christ of which Jesus Christ is the Head. The members are those who have trusted by faith the finished work of Christ. The purpose of the church is to glorify God by loving Him and by making Him known to a lost world.

What we believe about the future?

We believe that though we live in an imperfect world at the moment, all who trust in Jesus have a great hope for the future. We believe that Jesus will return bringing with Him a new heaven and a new earth, which will be a wonderful thing.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Welcome

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at Southborough Lane Baptist Church for our Sunday Service starting at 10:30am. When you arrive, you should be greeted by our friendly Welcome Team.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There are disabled toilets in the main foyer.

Our Service

The service begins at 10:30am and includes a time of All-Age worship before the children leave to go to their age appropriate groups. This is followed by a time of singing, led by our musicians. Sometimes a person might pray out loud or read a small passage from the Bible. Other times people share things that they believe God is saying to the whole church family. This might seem strange the first time you hear it, but it’s all part of our connecting with God. We then share news and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church. One of our leaders will then give a talk that is Bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We usually then finish with a final song. Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the service. It is a great way to meet people, or simply take time to find your bearings. All refreshments are free of charge.

What about my children?

You should bring your children into the church with you for the beginning of the service and they will all go out together when announced. We have a programme lined up for children of different ages:

  • Babies and young toddlers (0 months to 3 years). Young children are welcome to stay in the church with you or if you feel more comfortable, parents can go into our front hall and watch the service live on our screen.
  • Paddlers (3-7 years)
  • Funday Morning (7-11 years)
  • Funday Morning + (11-15 years)
  • Young people (15+ years) Stay in service.

You will need to go with your children to their groups and register them as part of our child safety policy.

The children's group activities vary depending on the age. As well as a friendly welcome, the session will include Bible stories, praying, music, craft, drama and fun games. Please pick up your children as soon as the service finishes.

Getting Connected

Connect Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small Connect Groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet at different times (mornings, afternoons and evenings), throughout the week. We can put you in touch with a Connect Group leader who will be more than happy to tell you about their group and invite you along.

Serving and Volunteering

If you want to get involved in the life of the church, you can sign up to serve on a team.
